Conquering the trails – tackling MTB in Stellenbosch

The temperatures in our wonderful country are on the rise as we cycle through the glorious season of Spring. And with the mercury rising, now is the perfect time to take advantage of the outdoors and get physical. MTB or mountain biking has become increasing popular and there are so many excellent trails across the country that range in difficulty and length, there’s something suitable for all skill levels. Chatting to our offices it became quite clear that Stellenbosch offers not just one but two excellent trails that are perfect for enticing the winter-weary outdoors.

The Jonkershoek / Assegaaibosch MTB Trail is quite possibly the best in SA and if you check out mtbroutes.co.za you will see why. “This MTB trail is situated in the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve close to the suburbs of Uniepark, Rozendal, Mostertsdrift (one of our suburbs of the day – view it on Instagram) and Karindal in Stellenbosch. The distance options vary from 10-45km and the grading is intermediate to technical.

To understand Jonkershoek you really have to appreciate that this is a commercial forest which is regularly harvested. This means trails are always changing, disappearing, rebuilt, morphing into different routes and generally keeping you on your toes. There are challenging routes over mountainous terrain, with spectacular scenery on the adjoining Department of Forestry facility. Barbara Kriel, property consultant for Fine & Country Stellenbosch, adds,”Jonkershoek Nature Reserve is one of the most popular MTB trails in the Western Cape, with Capetonians and residents from neighbouring towns making regular excursions to Stellenbosch over weekends to enjoy the various trails on offer. There are also various restaurants along the entrance of the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve offerings restaurant, change room and shower facilities.”

According to mtbroutes.co.za the Eden Paradyskloof MTB Trails run through Eden, an area above the suburb of Paradyskloof in Stellenbosch, featuring a pine plantation which is home to a various single tracks. This trail is perfect for some serious mountain bikers, offering adventurous downhill opportunities. There are two starting points to the route, with parking at the Paradyskloof Plantation at the Engen garage on the R44.
